The Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club is set to move under new management, getting a helping hand from a group of golfers at Cedar Point Golf Club in Suffolk.

The future sale of the club to the group headed by Dwight Schaubach is similar to a move several years ago when the group took over the operation of the Williamsburg Golf and Country Club.

“We have a group who will take over our Club in the best interest in keeping it the way it is, with many improvements,” said Cindy Morris, interim general manager of Elizabeth Manor, in a newsletter.  Elizabeth Manor members now are being updated on the transition.

In May Jesse Johnson was elected president. In addition to Johnson and Morris, the other board of director members selected were Shirley Sondej, Mike Old, Jack Welsby, Roger Newsom, Rob Wilber, Linda McKone, Don Cary, Art Anthony and Karl Quinn. Quinn is the longtime Eastern Amateur director and chairman of the executive committee.

Elizabeth Manor was organized in 1948. The founding group formed a corporation and received its charter on May 14, 1948, according to the golf club’s website. T.A. Willett was elected the first president and E. Saunders Early Sr. the treasurer. The initial group also included Chandler Harper, Charles F. Harper Jr., Joseph Tusing, R.R. McCoy, Harry McCready, Bus Beale, George Diggs, Wolga Bland and Ralph Yearby.

The golf course designer was Dick Wilson. The course opened in 1951. The par 70 layout covers 6,462 yards.
It became the home of the Eastern Amateur in 1957 when the late George Skinner started the tournament.
The current club professional is Dave Martin. Jeremy Bailey is course superintendent.
